In April 2023, I had the opportunity to test the Emporia home EV charger, which had grown in popularity and was highly requested by our readers. I came away impressed by what the package offered, especially at its price point. As a result, I named it our best budget smart charger, and in my review, I praised it for its design and features while criticizing the included holster. Today, Emporia Energy has announced a new home EV charger in its lineup, the Emporia Pro.
The Emporia Pro is the next evolution of the award-winning Classic model and features PowerSmart Load Management technology. According to Emporia, this charging system intelligently monitors available power through the Vue Home Energy Monitor that is installed directly in an electrical panel. PowerSmart uses real-time data from the Vue to dynamically adjust charging rates, so the vehicle charges at the maximum safe rate without ever exceeding an electrical panel’s capacity. Since the Vue Home Energy Monitor is bundled with the charger, users get access to monitoring real-time energy usage throughout their home, so they can keep home energy use under the peak demand threshold.
As expected, the charger is a Level 2 that can deliver speeds of up to 48 amps with hardware installation, or 40 amps when using a NEMA 14-50 outlet. Initially, it’s offered with a J1772 connector, but a NACS connector is coming soon. The Emporia Pro is UL certified, Energy Star rated, and NEMA 4 rated, certifying it for both indoor and outdoor installations. Attached to the charger is a 25-foot charging cable. I’m also happy to hear that it comes with a different holder.
Priced from $599, the Emporia Pro Smart EV Charger includes a three-year warranty. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on one in the near future to put it through its paces and see how it ranks against the other home EV chargers we’ve tested previously. Look for our review soon.
“The launch of the Emporia Pro represents the future of smart energy management by combining high-speed charging with visibility into your home’s energy usage,” said Ben Thacker, Business Development and Strategic Partnerships at Emporia. “This isn’t just about the convenience of at-home EV charging; it’s empowering homeowners to take control of their energy usage and save money on their utility bills.”
