Chevy has debuted an all-electric NASCAR race car

Chevrolet has unveiled its Blazer EV.R NASCAR prototype in advance of the upcoming Daytona 500 race. This prototype reflects Chevrolet’s commitment to testing and integrating new technologies that may benefit both its racing initiatives and production vehicles.

Eric Warren, the executive director of global motorsports competition for General Motors, stated that while the company will continue to utilize its established V8 technology in NASCAR, there is an ongoing effort to enhance power, durability, and efficiency. This initiative aims to translate racing insights into improvements for consumer electric vehicles.

The Blazer EV.R is equipped with three six-phase electric motors, generating over 1,300 horsepower and capable of reaching 15,000 rpm. It is powered by a 78-kWh liquid-cooled battery.

In a press release, Chevy emphasized the importance of customer choice, offering a diverse range of vehicles, including electric, gasoline, and diesel options. The company views motorsports as a valuable platform for innovation and a practical environment for engineers to experiment with new technologies.

The prototype utilizes NASCAR’s Next Gen chassis and suspension, featuring a programmable all-wheel drive system and Goodyear Racing Eagle tires. Chevrolet collaborated with NASCAR and other manufacturers to establish the technical parameters for the prototype.

In terms of design, GM Design worked alongside motorsports engineers to incorporate styling elements from the production Blazer EV SS into the Blazer EV.R. Phil Zak, executive director of Chevrolet Global Design, noted that the prototype’s design focuses on aerodynamics and performance, presenting a lower and wider profile.

During testing at Carolina Motorsports Park in South Carolina, GM engineers successfully transitioned the prototype from concept to a reliable racing vehicle.

Additionally, Chevrolet plans to use the Blazer EV SS, a model that delivers 615 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, as the pace car for the 67th Daytona 500 on February 16, 2025. The pace car will be driven by actor Alan Ritchson.
