2022 GMC Hummer EV revealed

The wait is finally over. We now have details on the upcoming, all-electric pickup truck from GMC. Badged as the Hummer EV, GMC claims it’s the world’s first electric super truck.

Powering the Hummer EV is GM’s Ultium Drive setup, with an estimated 1,000 horsepower being sent to all four wheels. Additionally, GMC is claiming 11,500 lb-ft of torque — though that’s not exactly the case.

“We had one goal for Hummer EV: Build the most capable factory truck — ever,” said Al Oppenheiser, GMC Hummer EV chief engineer. “It’s an absolute off-road beast with a unique e4WD drive system that provides maneuverability unlike anything GM has ever offered before.”

The Hummer EV is expected to have 350 miles of range, and support DC fast charging of up to 350 kW.

Off-road capability is the name of the game with this truck. This includes a segment-exclusive 4-wheel steering functionality called CrabWalk, which allows the truck to move diagonally.

Adaptive air suspension adjusts ride height for off-road see, and includes something called Extract Mode, which can lift the suspension by 6 inches to clear boulders or better ford water.

Standard on the Hummer EV are 35-inch-OD Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, and the truck is capable of accommodating 37-inch tires from the factory.

As you’d expect, there is underbody protection to product critical system components, and there’s a new UltraVision camera system that includes front and rear underbody cameras. There are up to 18 different available camera views, reducing the need for a spotter on the trails.

The infotainment system features a variety of widgets to monitor off-road stats, including tire pressure, pitch and roll angles, and more.

The 2022 model will be the Edition 1 of the Hummer EV, and include some special features.

GMC claims the Hummer EV can run to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds, and to access the launch control system necessary to do that, the driver must activate the “Watts to Freedom” function.

The Hummer EV has Drive Mode Control, which allows the driver to select what type of driving they are doing, so the truck can optimize itself for the situation.

There is also Adaptive Ride Control, which is continuous dampening to improve on-road comfort and respond quickly off-road.

The infotainment screen on the Edition 1 is 13.4-inches diagonal, and the driver information center display is 12.3-inches in size. That, combined with technical interior details creates a modern feeling cabin.

There is 3 years of Super Cruise as well, including the latest enhanced version of the system.

The truck also features a rear drop glass window and a power tonneau cover, plus GMC’s coveted MultiPro tailgate.

“The GMC Hummer EV re-imagines an instantly-recognizable silhouette for a modern, all-electric future,” said Phil Zak, design executive director. “Its design visually communicates extreme capability, which is reinforced with rugged architectural details offered with a premium, well-executed and appointed interior.”

Production begins in late 2021 as a 2022 model, and will be built at GM’s Factory Zero Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center.

The Edition 1, the first on sale, will have a starting price of $112,595 including destination. Additional trim levels, including presumably a base model, will follow in 2023 and later.

Update (10/20/20 8:44pm EDT): Added the range and charge time.
