Buying a new car can be quite the process. Thanks to Tesla’s direct sales method, it is a little easier. The price on the website is the price you pay. There’s no haggling salespeople. Well, at least that’s how it’s supposed to be.
But if you’re in the market for a new Tesla model (Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X), there are ways to save some money or cash in on some incentives.
When is the best time to buy a new Tesla?
The end of the quarter.
This is especially true if you’re comfortable with buying a car already in inventory at a Tesla retail location.
The last week of March, June, September, and December is the best time to pick up a new Tesla. Tesla is often trying to make a final push to move units before the company has to report sales.
Lots of Tesla’s decisions are made by shareholder value, so not hitting an estimate can cause the company to take a hit to the stock price.
For the end of the year in 2020, Tesla is offering 3 months of “Full Self Driving” for free. Earlier this year, it offered one year of free Supercharging on Model 3 and Model Y.

Sometimes the company will discount upgrades, such as bringing back Enhanced Autopilot, which provides many features of “Full Self Driving,” for vehicles it wasn’t offered on before. Tesla often chooses the end of the quarter to raise the price of “Full Self Driving” and then Musk will tease out it’s going to increase in price to drive sales.
Local Tesla stores also have sales goals, so there may be some flexibility in features and accessories if you walk in right before the end of the quarter.
The point is, if you’re interested in picking up one of the electric cars from Fremont and add it to your garage, the best time to buy is always right before the end of the quarter.
